Rewind Series 4 Episode 1 – The Roving Eye

When viewers tuned into our News in 1964, NBN Channel 3 was barely 2 years old, but already locals were seeing the value of this exciting new technology.

To meet the demand, stringers were employed in regional areas to capture footage of their own local community.

Not just News of the day, but also stories of interest, for a new program called The Roving Eye.

Covering people, places and events, The Roving Eye was a mini documentary of life.

The cameraman’s aim, to bring out the best in their own special region.

The film was then sent to Newcastle by train or bus to be shown on NBN.

In 1964, viewers would have seen the activities of the Taree Anglers Club, spectacular rodeo action in Aberdeen, the Highland dancing festival in Toronto… and a celebration in Cessnock to mark 50 years of the opening of the local hospital.

This piece of film would have traveled to Newcastle on the BHP night shift bus, to be collected by NBN and broadcast the next evening…
